To mark the 50th anniversary of bursary support at Withington, on Thursday 18 June, the whole school community will come together for a sponsored walk, inspired by Withington’s very first fundraising event back in the 1970s. Pupils and staff will take on either a 10 mile (Senior School) or 5.8 mile (Junior School) walk for what promises to be a memorable Giving Day.
By making a donation you’ll encourage pupils every step of the way to raise as much as possible in this landmark year. You can also add a message of encouragement for our walkers alongside your donation to help inspire them on the day.
Even better, all donations made before 18 June will be match funded, so your gift will go twice as far.
On the day of the walk, there will be live challenges and milestone moments which will unlock further funds. So, every step taken and every donation given will help open doors for future generations of pupils.
Each form has their own Giving Day page to encourage them to seek sponsorship and we’ve added a fun element of friendly competition: the Junior and Senior forms that raise the most will be rewarded with a well-earned pizza treat before the end of term!

As part of our celebrations to mark 50 years of the WGS Trust and bursary support at Withington, we are hearing from 50 people throughout the year about why bursaries matter to them. Here we share four of their stories.
Teeba, Alumna & Former Bursary Recipient
Quite simply, the bursary didn’t just give me access to an education, it gave me direction, belief, and opportunity. I am deeply grateful, and I hope my journey shows just how life-changing bursary support can be.
Susan, Donor & Alumna
My father was involved in WGS governance in the late 1970s and fully committed to the creation of bursaries. I support the Bursary Fund because an excellent education can change the course of a person's life, and not only of that one person but of her whole family and her future family too.
Elizabeth Robinson, Director of Sixth Form
Watching our bursary students flourish, particularly as they reach the pinnacle of their school careers in the Sixth Form, is profoundly moving. Their confidence, ambition and success are tangible. For me, they are living proof that bursaries are not simply about financial support; they are about possibility, access, and the quiet, life-changing power of belief.
Imogen, Alumna & Former Bursary Recipient
Bursary support at WGS had a profound impact on my education and future. Through outstanding teaching and rich musical and sporting opportunities the school nurtured both my academic and personal development, as well as friendships that have lasted a lifetime. That support was truly transformative and I'll be forever grateful.
Ros, Alumna & Donor
My sisters and I received bursary support and all benefited from the wonderful start our Withington education gave us. I’ve decided to include the Bursary Fund in my will, to give back as much as I can to help the girls of the future. What goes around, comes around, as they say.
Ranjit Munro, WGS Trustee
When it was suggested that I become a trustee of the WGS Trust, it was an obvious ‘yes’ from me. My education is the basis of my success. All young women deserve a great education and whilst we can’t necessarily achieve that overnight, we can all do something, and a good place to start is supporting bursaries at Withington.
